Restaurant Review: La Chata de Guadalajara in Puerto Vallarta
We had planned on discovering a new restaurant in the downtown area for this week’s restaurant review. But, after wandering up and down for nearly an hour, we couldn’t come to an agreement on which restaurant we would like to try. So hungry and tired of bickering, we chose La Chata de Guadalajara located on the Malecon(boardwalk), one of our old standbys.
The food at La Chata is consistently good and the prices are more reasonable than the prices at other restaurants on the Malecon. We always take our out-of-town visitors and La Chata has always been a hit. La Chata has live music every day and a great view of the boardwalk and bay.
The Puerto Vallarta location of La Chata is the third location of a well known and loved restaurant from Guadalajara in operation since 1942. We enjoy going to the location in the historic center of Gaudalajara as well as the one here in Puerto Vallarta. Visit the La Chata website, www.lachata.com.mx, to see pictures of the Guadalajara locations and the the full menu. The prices listed are about 15% lower than in Puerto Vallarta.
Type of Food: Seafood, beef and chicken dishes, and Antojitos
Price: Moderate - Antojitos cost around $70 pesos. “Antojitos” translates as little cravings. Typical antojitos are tacos, quesadillas, sopes, flautas. Fish, shrimp and beef dishes around $165 pesos.
Location: Downtown on the boardwalk. Paseo Diaz Ordaz #708, Tel.222-5529
Hours: 8:00am to 12:00pm
Service: Quick and cheerful
What we ate:
1 order of pork flautas (fried tacos rolled into a tube. “Flauta” means flute in Spanish)
1 order of pozole (a pork and hominy soup)
What we drank:
1 Diet Pepsi
1 Bottle of water
Total cost: $177 Pesos
Comments: A great Mexican style restaurant popular with tourists and locals. La Chata is located on the second floor. The stairs can be difficult for someone with mobility problems.
The view from our table. It’s difficult to get a table by the window during busy times. Arriving early for lunch or dinner gives you a better chance of getting a table with a view.
Pork flautas with country potatos. At $70 pesos, this is a great deal. Tasty and filling. The plate is much larger than it looks.
Pork pozole. You add lettuce, radish, lime, oregano, and chile to your taste. Pozole is Mexican comfort food and is my all time favorite Mexican Dish.
The strolling musicians are excellent. For a small fee they will play for you at your table. Have the musicians play for you. It’s a great experience.
