Art by Chase in Puerto Vallarta
If you were wondering who painted the murals that popped up around town, I have the answer. They were done by a Belgian artist named Chase who lives in L.A. Below the pictures is an email forwarded to me in which Chase describes how the mural project came to be and what the murals mean.
I like the murals. They have added a fresh energy to downtown and put a smile on my face. It’s cool to be walking down the street, turn a corner, and have a great colorful mural jump out at you. An annual or even semi-annual mural event would be a great addition to the city’s cultural scene. I have no idea who would give approval for such a thing but it is worth looking into.
The following is an email from the artist forwarded to me:
Hey Geezers!
Earlier this year I met Alejandra Macedo Jiminez while painting a mural in
Venice, California. She had been working hand-in-hand with the Director
of Tourism of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in order to rescue their Downtown
area.
She spoke of the nearby city of Nuevo Vallarta and how their
corporate/commercial resort approach was slowly beginning to infiltrate
and threaten the authenticity and cultural flavor of Puerto Vallarta. She
was very familiar with my “Remember Who You Are” campaign and thought it
was the perfect message to send to the visitors and more importantly, the
local people of Puerto Vallarta.
I called my friend Bue, who was flown in from Belgium and together we
painted the first ever mural in Puerto Vallarta! We finished the mural 10
days ago and it depicts a little Mexican girl with the text next to her
saying “ Recuerda Quien Eres” (Remember Who You Are), as well as
mountains, Bue’s “Hey Hey & Friends” and a whale, a symbol of Puerto
Vallarta.
I had an amazing time there and many other things got painted so please
view the photo-strip attached to see the pictures! (1.2megs)
