Farmers Market Old Town Puerto Vallarta

Visit the Puerto Vallarta Farmers Market

Puerto Vallarta now has its own farmers market and it has been a huge hit with locals and tourists alike. I always thought that Puerto Vallarta needed a farmers market and know it has one and I am really glad that it’s doing well. The market runs every Saturday from 10:00am to 2:00pm and is located at the Paradise Community Center at Pulpito #127 in Olas Altas.

You will find many local handcrafted products such as baked goods, soaps, jewelery, specialty meats, locally grown produce, and fresh cut flowers.

You can get more information on the Farmers Market website.

Carnes del Mundo does booming business every Saturday at the market. They stock a full selection of cold cuts, steaks, and sausages to take with you. They are also grilling sausages and making pulled pork sandwiches to eat on the spot. Now you don’t have to drive all the way to Bucerias to get their meats. In my opinion, they make the best cold cuts and aged steaks anywhere! And, as they say, “you can’t beat their meat.”

A good post on Carnes del Mundo in Bucerias. Get the current Carnes del Mundo price list.

The great looking breads in the picture come from the Artisan Bakery in Downtown Puerto Vallarta.

Wonderful handmade soaps for sale.

Live entertainment gives the market a great vibe. The group is named The Big Mess and they appeared at The Palm in Olas Altas.

Make an effort to visit the Puerto Vallarta Farmers Market to support all of the local vendors.

Paradise Plaza Shopping Center in Nuevo Vallarta

Paradise Plaza Mall – Nuevo Vallarta

Paradise Plaza in Nuevo Vallarta is a beautiful, modern shopping mall. If you are staying in Nuevo Vallarta it has everything you need so you don’t have to go all the way to Puerto Vallarta to shop. It is also air conditioned which makes it a really nice place to cool off during the hotter months. In the food court, there is an amazing kid’s play area that is two stories high. Paradise Plaza is at the entrance to Paradise Village and walking distance from many of the other resorts and is right next to the Puerto Vallarta yacht club. Any taxi will be able to take you there.

Palm Tree in Marina Vallarta

Palm Tree Swaying in the Breeze

This picture of a palm tree swaying in the breeze makes me want to spend the day at the beach.

It stands on the edge of the beach in Marina Vallarta right where Bocanegra street ends.

In the background you can see the golf course and the Bayview Grand condominiums.

Softball League in Puerto Vallarta

Playing Softball in Puerto Vallarta

One of my favorite things about living in Puerto Vallarta is playing in the softball league. More than 700 players participate. The games are played at the municipal sports complex. Teams play once a week in tournaments that last nearly six months.

The men’s division is divided into three skill levels. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I play in the third level which is the lowest level of play – a little slower and perhaps a little safer. Although, we all seem to get bashed up fairly regularly.

The top level players are outstanding and would be able to hold their own against any team from anywhere. I aspire to play as well as they do but it will never happen.

Going for a beer after the game is an important part of the softball experience. We like to go to the Botanero San Miguel on Nicaragua street a block up from the beach. They have great snacks, lots of sports on TV, and a really friendly staff.

Check out a few pictures from one of the league games.

All three softball levels are slow pitch.

Safe at third!

Many games attract a large, raucous crowd although attendance at this game was sparse.

Games are played Monday through Saturday evenings from 7:00pm to 11:00pm. If you want get a feel for the town and the people, make the effort to spend some time one evening watching a game. The stadium is easy to get to. It’s on the north end of downtown. You can see a map here.

Coconut Vendors in Nuevo Vallarta

Coconuts for Sale

The beaches in Puerto Vallarta are filled with vendors of every type of merchandise and food you could imagine: jewelry, blankets, artwork, fish on a stick, shrimp on a stick, even coconut milk.

To get the coconut milk the vendor whacks the top of the coconut off with a machete. He then pours the milk into a plastic bag and puts a straw into it so that the customer can drink it. They were charging $40 pesos for fresh coconut milk that day.

We took these pictures out in Nuevo Vallarta during Spring Break.

Here is the map to the beach.

Downtown Street Beautification

Sidewalk Expansion Project

Downtown Puerto Vallarta is undergoing a major beautification project. The sidewalk on the shop side of the boardwalk is being doubled in width and planter boxes are being added.

The sidewalk has always been too narrow for the number of people visiting downtown. Now, instead of bumping into every other person you pass you will be able to stroll comfortably while window shopping.

It will look great when it’s finished. I’d say it will all be done in about three weeks.

Gorditas Dona Tota

Great Gorditas to Fill Your Stomach

Every time we go to the Soriana shopping center near Pitillal we always stop to order gorditas at Gorditas Dona Tota.

If you are not familiar with gorditas, they are thick disks made from corn meal that are split open and filled with an infinite variety of stews and shredded meats. You can find them throughout Mexico.

Gorditas Dona Tota is a franchised chain that was founded in Ciudad Victoria in the state of Taumalipas. The chain operates in almost every state in Mexico and has recently begun expansion into the U.S. Currently, they have six locations in Texas. Puerto Vallarta has only one location.

My three favorite gorditas from Dona Tota: picadillo (ground beef), carnitas en salsa verde (pork in green salsa), and rajas con queso (Poblano chile and cheese). I’m stuffed after just three.

Prices are very reasonable. Each gordita costs between $7.00 and $8.00 pesos which is about $.55 US at the current exchange rate.

The mall, where you will find Gorditas Dona Tota, is located just south of Pitillal on Francisco Villa. The mall is also home to Cinepolis, a great multiplex movie theatre that plays first-run movies in English.

We had some good barbacoa tacos from the “Aqui es Tlaxcala” taco stand located on the corner of Calle Brasilia and Calle Ecuador.
