Road Trip Jala, Nayarit

Jala1Jala2

This past weekend we took our first trip to Jala, Nayarit for the baptism of a friend’s son. The baptism was held at the Basilica Lateranense a beautiful old Catholic church which was built in the latter half the 18th century.

Adobe houses, cobblestone streets, cowboys on horseback made me feel as if I were walking down the streets built for a Western set. I felt self conscious - not because I was an out of place gringo in small town Mexico - but because I was walking so fast compared to how the locals walk. The town has a pleasantly sleepy atmosphere and my high speed pace received more than a few looks as if to say, “what’s the rush. It can’t be that important.” It feels as if nothing ever happens in Jala and I mean this in a very good way.

We were fortunate to have stayed with a local family who had a great old adobe house a block from the church. Before they bought the house it had been used as a school. All of the interior doors in the main part of the house open with enormous old-fashioned skeleton keys.

The best known attraction near Jala is the active volcano Ceboruco which you can climb and see active steam vents. Even though Jala has few tourist attractions it is worth a weekend visit to enjoy the small town atmosphere. Jala is located just off the highway to Guadalajara three hours from Puerto Vallarta.
