What’s on the Table – Pt. 1 Cholula Salsa

Periodically, I’ll be writing posts about the Mexican foods you will find on our dinner table. Many of our favorite foods are quite common and are also available in the U.S. and Canada now. Food plays such an important role in Mexican culture and many of the foods and eating habits have integrated into our daily routine

Salsa Cholula is a product that I can no longer live without. I put it on everything: chips, chicken, beef, soups and vegetables. But, my absolute favorite use for Cholula is for dousing a big plate of scrambled eggs and ham. The best way I can describe it is that it tastes similar to Tabasco sauce but with less vinegar. It burns just right, not so hot that I break a sweat, but hot enough to let me know it’s packing heat.

Cholula salsa

Oddly enough, I first tried salsa Cholula in Fresno, Ca., not in Mexico, at a little taco joint that someone recommended. When we got back to Mexico, I went looking for it at the supermarket and sure enough they had plenty of it. Somehow I had missed it on the shelf before and had never tried it.

Please leave a comment on this post telling us what your favorite salsa or hot sauce is. There are hundreds of different salsas in available in Mexico and the selection varies across the country. Mexico wouldn’t be Mexico without salsa.

I make great salsa. Check out my Mexican Salsa Recipe.

Not Cholula. Tapatio! It’s life in a bottle.

I’ve seen this bottle many times but never connected it to the city, Cholula, outside of Puebla. I visited Cholula last year and it is an incredible city, steep with Mexican charm and history. There is a castle built atop a pyramid on the edge of town that is a must see. The town square is very interesting as well. I’ll try the hot sauce now. ;)

What is the sauce called with all the strips of onions? I love that one. Had it at Los Xitomates last week. Great place.

Cholula Salsa is my absolute favorite condiment. I often see bottles of Cholula on tables in U.Ss restaurants, but it is labeled as Hot Sauce instead of Salsa. I’m not sure if there is a difference, because I only possess the Salsa. Anyway, I first discovered Cholula Salsa in a liquor store in Nuevo Progresso, Mexico. They were giving tasting samples and I bought 3 bottles. I made them stretch over about a year time period until I could go back and buy another 3 bottles. This year I tried to find the salsa in Los Algodones, but they didn’t have it! I will start ordering it online so I don’t have to ration it or run the risk of running out. We especially like to brush it on salmon filets and chicken breasts and grill them. I really love this stuff!

My husband and I just visited Mexico for the first time, about 3 months ago. We LOVE spicy food and made sure we picked up a variety of hot sauces while we were there. We bought this Cholula Salsa because we saw a Mexican lady buying a bottle, so we thought it *has* to be good and authentic.

We haven’t opened this bottle yet, but now I can’t wait!
